It may seem that Toyota is unusually late to the EV party. Fortunately, a close look at the Japanese automaker’s lineup will tell that Toyota has always been a big fan of eco-friendly cars. Unlike the brand’s hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and the last EV, the Rav4 EV, the bZ4X is a fully electric crossover with a provocative styling to separate it from other Toyotas.
If you don’t mind its rather sing-song name, this latest entry into the Toyota lineup is a product of Toyota’s collaboration with Subaru and will usher in a new lineup of Toyota’s battery-electric cars under the marque, ‘bZ.’
As Toyota plans to introduce over 11 all-electric vehicles to the Toyota lineup by 2025, the 2023 Toyota bZ4X is the first EV of the seven EVs under the ‘bZ’ marque. This electric crossover is on the newly developed e-TNGA platform with great design and electrified performance.
Already, Toyota is renowned for its excellent build quality and reliability. However, as the brand moves to electrified cars, will the 2023 Toyota Bz4x still offers the same traits we have come to love about Toyotas?
Engine & Performance
Under the hood of the base model are a front-wheel-drive system and a single electric motor at the front axle with a power output of up to 201 horsepower. If you want more power with this all-new electric crossover, you’re better off with the available all-wheel-drive version that swaps the front motor in favor of dual electric motors, one at the front and another at the rear, combining to give 215 horsepower (extra 14 horses).
Toyota claims that the all-wheel-drive version is capable of going from 0 to 62 mph in just 7.7 seconds.
Thanks to the collaboration between Toyota and Subaru, we believe that Subaru’s exceptional all-wheel-drive technology and exciting driving performance will rub off on this Toyota’s electric crossover. While we are yet to find out how this EV drives, it won’t be a surprise if we get a blend of engaging drive manners and a comfortable ride from this EV.
Range & Charging
Toyota equipped the 2023 bZ4X with a 71.4-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, according to Toyota, will deliver an estimated 250 miles of driving range on a full charge in the front-wheel-drive models. Toyota is yet to say anything about the range estimates for the more powerful dual electric motor and all-wheel-drive models.
Toyota says that this electric crossover will utilize DC fast charging, not affecting its battery life. Using the 150 kW fast-charger, you can charge this electric crossover to 80% in less than 30 minutes.
Interior, Cargo
From the pictures we have seen, we expect the upcoming Toyota bZ4X to sport a modern and futuristic interior with premium materials. The dash will sport a large touchscreen for infotainment and another large dash screen in front of the driver for the instrument cluster. The upcoming Bz4X could be as spacious and comfy as the Rav4.
